When visiting Upington
Upington was founded in 1884 and is located in the Northern Cape, on the banks of the Orange River. The area is best known for its export-quality grapes, raisins and wines, which are cultivated on the rich flood plains of the Orange River. Upington has a modern Airport with scheduled flights and is well-known 4900m in length runway.
The Open Africa Kokerboom wine and food route lies where the Kalahari and the Nama-Karoo deserts meet. Numerous farm stalls (the Pienk Padstal, and Akkerboom) and restaurants give the opportunity to taste local food.
The Khoi people called the Augrabies Falls ‘Aukoerebis’, referring to the Orange River thundering its way downwards for 60m in a spectacular waterfall. The 28 000h on both the northern and southern sides provide sanctuary to a diversity of species.
In a part of South Africa that is, for all intents and purposes, practically desert, one does not expect to find a wine route. But the Orange River supports row upon row of land under vine – an incomprehensible stretch of intense green on either banks of the river.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a vast wildlife preserve in the Kalahari Desert region of Botswana and South Africa, bordering Namibia to the west. It’s characterized by red dunes and dry rivers.
